Steel and Steel & Glass Sculpture

William Freer’s multi-layered metal sculptures forge an exchange of light and shadow. Working from paper maquettes, he creates large reliefs from mild, stainless and CorTen steel, a favorite material of many artists. He will develop a rust patina or powder coat the work to complete the communication depending on its mood and indoor or outdoor placement, or at the Collector’s request.

Still & Kinetic Art Examples

Sometimes his larger works infuse architectural movements like Arts & Crafts, and stir in a note of the American Southwest. Accents of dichroic and opalescent glass often add iridescence and surprise, while many designs are interactive, allowing the viewer to pivot the work 360 degrees, to reveal a supporting design on the reverse side. He has recently introduced tabletop-sized sculptures which exhibit the same effects as monumental pieces.

OUT THE WINDOW ~ Steel, powder coat, mounted on boulder

William Freer steel sculpture ~ 55" x 25" (64" H on boulder base). I interpreted this scene through the window of my studio. The first layer of the steel sculpture represents four window panes, followed by a sky filled with symbols of my own design for sun, wind, clouds and rain expressed in a warm southwestern motif. The interplay of light and shadow brings drama to the monochromatic, powder coated work.

ROSE WINDOW IN WHITE WiTH RED ~ Angle View

William Freer steel & glass sculpture ~ 14" x 14" (angle view). This sculpture offers multiple layers of steel plus 1 layer of glass to give the work dramatic depth and bold color. The piece was inspired by the stained glass rose windows seen in cathedrals throughout the world, especially of Gothic architectural style. The work is powder coated in white and pivots to highlight a related lacy image on the back. The base is coated with a lightly flecked bronze finish. Sun or artificial light brighten the red glass even further.

THIS END UP (Front) Featured at La Posada de Santa Fe ~ Steel, rust patina, dichroic and opalescent glass, stainless steel pivot

William Freer steel sculpture ~ 96" x 36" with swivel base THIS END UP was inspired by the wind that whirls down over the crest of the Sandia Mountains. The moon is centered on both horizons by a large disc of dichroic glass that shows through the spinning wind pattern of rusted steel.

THIS END UP (Back) ~ Steel, rust patina, dichroic and opalescent glass, stainless steel pivot

AUMKARA (Landscape Design with Sculpture ~ bamboo, cedar, steel with rust patina, float glass

William Freer landscape design with two steel sculptures ~ 96" x 36" ~ The owner asked me to create a single sculpture for her backyard, but when I saw the fireplace and fence I realized her space needed much more. Then I saw the bust of the Buddha under her pine tree and asked questions about Joan’s philosophy. The back yard landscaping included designing and installing 6 large bamboo panels and two themed sculptures for the practicing Buddhist.

AUMKARA (Left of Fireplace) Steel, rust patina, float glass

William Freer steel sculpture ~ 96" x 36" ~ These two sculptures are an appreciation of the collector's Buddhism. I used the classic symbol, aumkara (om), followed by a lotus flower (the roots grow from the mud and the stem grows up through the water to blossom above the surface - the progress of the soul from materialism through experience into the bright sunshine of enlightenment). The large circle represents Emptiness in Buddhism. These symbols are entwined with those of the southwest, revealing the story of the collector.

SKY HARVEST (Watering Circle) CorTen steel, stainless steel, rust patina, float glass, on a 3-foot base.

William Freer steel sculpture ~ 54" x 24." This work is a celebration of that point when Nature and Man work together to create grand patterns of farmland. Here I interpret the geometric shapes of watering circles and crop rows highlighted with rippled water-colored glass. Four sculptures are available as a set or individually. Each work is swivel-mounted to gather the natural light and reveal a different but related pattern of glass and steel on the reverse side. Also available mounted in a moss boulder, ask for details.

SKY HARVEST (Tractor Paths) CorTen steel, stainless steel, rust patina, float glass, on a 3-foot base.

SKY HARVEST Tractor Paths, Steel & Glass Sculpture As I travel the country and look earthward over American farmland I am awed by the magnificent patterns created by rows of crops and the tractor paths that bring them together. Here I accentuate the paths with beautiful green glass. Four sculptures are available as a set or individually. Each work is swivel-mounted to gather the natural light and offer a different but related pattern of glass and steel on the reverse side. Also available mounted in natural moss boulder, ask for details.

SKY HARVEST (Harvest Time) CorTen steel, rust patina, float glass, on a 3-foot base.

William Freer steel sculpture ~ 54" x 24." The magnificent colors and geometric displays of America’s farmland we see from above tell a story of growth and promise. I imagine these lush acres bathed in the yellows of cultivated wildflowers and mustard. Here I blend the crops and water with veined float glass of yellows, greens and blues. Four sculptures are available as a set or individually. Each work is swivel-mounted to gather the natural light and offer a different but related pattern of glass and steel on the reverse side. The moss rock ties these sculptures to nature. Also available mounted in a moss boulder, ask for details.

SKY HARVEST (Fall Crops) CorTen steel, rust patina, float glass, moss-rock boulder

William Freer steel sculpture ~ 54" x 24." Few images are as powerful as fall crops at harvest time, as seen in an aerial view. Here I imagine acres of rich, ripe vegetables planted in perfect rows and ready for picking. Veined float glass in waves of orange highlight the autumn colors. Four sculptures are available as a set or individually. Each work is swivel-mounted to gather the natural light and offer a different but related pattern of glass and steel on the reverse side. Also available mounted in a moss boulder, ask for details.

RECLINING FIGURE ~ rusted and polished steel on stone

William Freer ~ 22" x 31" x 11" ~Rusted steel sculpture with brightly polished steel band. RECLINING FIGURE can be seen as the story of today's highly stressed society. Here I have created a strong tension between the brightly polished steel band that interrupts and takes precedence over the relaxed figure behind.
